Does your anxiety control you?

I just got back from a recent trip to visit family in California and Idaho for the holiday. During this trip, I found myself consciously avoiding certain areas of my life due to my anxieties. One of the bigger ones that I fight is my need to have control of everything around me. What do I mean? I had to have my sister-in-law and niece take me to the airport in California to return home and as she drove, my fear built up because I did not have control of the vehicle. The constant need to hold my breath, close …

Sticks and stones (and words) can hurt us

I have been standing here at my son’s school waiting for him to come out, watching all of these other families and how they interact with each other. I have been watching the parent’s overall look compared to their child’s appearance. It got me thinking about my son and childhood in general. As a parent, am I helping my child, or are my words hurting his later years too? Have you ever said or heard, “comb your hair, it looks like a mess?” Here’s another one, “tuck your shirt in so you don’t look like a slob.” And one I …

What if…I overcome my doubt

Two words that have the opportunity to bring heartache, stress, and despair. Just two small words that can also bring new ideas, change, and hope. How can these two words be so powerful? You are faced with a decision that is too big to make on a whim, when your friend says, “yeah, but what if…” Those words break open a new way of thinking. And sometimes, that way of thinking can lead to uncertainty. DOUBT Your boss comes up to you with a new project that will be presented in front of the owners of the company. They asked …

The good and bad foods we have

It is that time of the year when the candy comes out. All of the cakes and cookies baked to perfection. Don’t forget the decadent and savory meals prepared for family and friends to feast on. Comfort foods are sprinkled throughout our lives to help carry us through all of those hard times. But did you know there are foods that can make you feel good and foods that can make you feel bad…naturally? Foods of the body I am not going to bore you with all of the medical and chemical descriptions of how our bodies work. But think …

Can you tell if someone needs help?

Look at the people around you. At their faces and the way they carry their body. Which ones are smiling, with a look of happiness? What about those that are not smiling? Are they sad, angry, or just a content expression? Can you tell which ones may be in need of help? Ones that are sad, depressed, lost, or that they may consider something drastic? You may be surprised on what you find. Can you tell? I go to work and talk with my coworkers with a cheerful tone and a smile on my face (most of the time.) Do …

Is PTSD Affecting your Life?

WARNING: This was very difficult for me to write and may be difficult for many to read. That one day back some 20 years ago in September that changed everything in the United States. I remember driving into work hearing about it. Coworkers at the time that lived nearby. I heard of people saying they were supposed to be on one of the planes, but for some reason they weren’t. Friends telling me about family and friends they lost. After that and to some degree even now, my heart races every time I see a shadow of an airplane cross …

What are some of your fears?

Just last weekend when my son asked me, “Mommy, what are you afraid of?” When he turned around and asked, “Daddy, what are you afraid of?” My husband, without batting an eye, replied. The only thing he said, “Losing you.” That was it. Nothing more and nothing less. I believe him too. I see how sensitive he is especially when he sees videos or movies with children getting hurt or needing to be saved. Notice how I haven’t told you MY answer yet? There is a reason. When my son asked me that question, immediately a list rolled through my …

NO CHANGE WITHOUT A CHOICE TO BE MADE

It feels like a dirty word sometimes. Change. One single word with such a powerful meaning that gives everyone such stress. “To change, or not to change. That is the question!” Last week in my post Want to Take a Drive Through Change I talked about making a change in my life as I realized that I was not as happy as I wanted to be. There was an underlying message, though. No change comes without a choice. Even not changing is a choice. No change will occur unless you, and only you choose to want a change. “I should …

A Tail of Stress and Anxiety

Such a Long Day You walk in the door from a long day at work, school, just life in general. There they are. So happy to see you every time. Those big brown eyes staring right at you. Just like that, your day stress begins to melt away. Such a powerful feeling, an unconditional love just for you. No other reason. Only that you are the one to walk through that door. Animals have a gift that even the smartest human doesn’t fully understand. A gift to know that a simple brush of fur, a purr at the right time, …
