Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

Sticks and stones (and words) can hurt us

I have been standing here at my son’s school waiting for him to come out, watching all of these other families and how they interact with each other. I have been watching the parent’s overall look compared to their child’s appearance. It got me thinking about my son and childhood in general. As a parent, am I helping my child, or are my words hurting his later years too? Have you ever said or heard, “comb your hair, it looks like a mess?” Here’s another one, “tuck your shirt in so you don’t look like a slob.” And one I …

Look how inspiration surrounds us

Since I started on this path about mental health, everywhere I turn I find inspiration. I go into Facebook, and I have post after post of quotes, tools to help sufferers battle anxiety, and companies reaching out to support anyone who needs it. Then I go to Instagram and TikTok, finding more quotes, videos, and complete strangers telling me that I am not alone in this world. Driving to work each morning, I have the radio up loud, singing to the song on my Pandora stations. Sitting back and really listening to the lyrics to my favorite bands, expressing their …

Is time ticking away from you

You have probably heard someone say, “a watched pot never boils.” Like it always seems that something you want to happen, takes forever to happen and those things you don’t, seem to always happen. A minute can take a long time to pass by if you watch every second tick on. But the one time you turn away, that minute has not only pass by, but so have others. Time ticking by slowly Here in Arizona, I have been enjoying some gorgeous weather. Clear blue skies with a scattering of little white clouds or no clouds at all. Temperatures are …

Thankful for today, for you.

Today in the US, we are celebrating Thanksgiving. It is a time to reflect on what you are thankful for in your life. But for me, these last few years have been a roller coaster ride. It has left me thankful for so little and so much. The last few years have taught me that in a moments notice, your life can change. The life you have been living for so many years, is no longer and now you have a new reality. And it is not just your life that is impacted. Thankful for now So, this year, I …

A minute ago, is history

A click, a snap, in a flash, or a blink. In a second, minute, or a tick of the clock. Life changes every second of every day. The past is the past. It was yesterday, an hour ago, and even a minute behind. But that second and that minute shaped our lives. It inched a way into our history, our personality. That history added a brick to our being. Becoming who we are today. The past thoughts I have heard people say things like, “don’t let your past define you.” Or how about this one, “I am the way I …

A Brave Sacrifice for the Nation

Today is Veteran’s Day. A day to honor all of those men and women past, present, and future that have given up their comforts of home to go to an unknown location and fight for the freedom we, as citizens, enjoy every day. A sacrifice for the nation of children, working class citizens, generations of love and peace. So many choose to leave family and friends home to gear up and risk everything. It is also a day to honor the families and friends at home, scared, proud, and strong. These are people that stay home to continue the legacy …

Reflection on mental health in a year

I can’t believe that I am coming up to my 1-year anniversary of writing this blog on mental health. It was this time last year I was taking the steps to create this site. I know I do not have many followers right now, but that is okay. Because I have followers. I have people around the world that take a minute to visit my site, read my stories, share my thoughts. That alone, is amazing. The Why About Mental Health I have been asked why I focus on mental health so much and how did I get started in …

Are you hiding behind a mask

Halloween is just around the corner. Children of all ages are dressed up in their favorite characters. Some are cute and adorable. Others are scary and grotesque. Silly ones with colors and designs. Girls with pretty dresses and boys with swords and masks. A time to look like something else, pretend you are someone else. A chance to wear a mask from the world. Behind the mask How often do you walk around, going about your day, when you see a coworker or a friend and suddenly you are standing straighter, smiling a little more, or quickly quieter? A subtle …

What if…I overcome my doubt

Two words that have the opportunity to bring heartache, stress, and despair. Just two small words that can also bring new ideas, change, and hope. How can these two words be so powerful? You are faced with a decision that is too big to make on a whim, when your friend says, “yeah, but what if…” Those words break open a new way of thinking. And sometimes, that way of thinking can lead to uncertainty. DOUBT Your boss comes up to you with a new project that will be presented in front of the owners of the company. They asked …

The good and bad foods we have

It is that time of the year when the candy comes out. All of the cakes and cookies baked to perfection. Don’t forget the decadent and savory meals prepared for family and friends to feast on. Comfort foods are sprinkled throughout our lives to help carry us through all of those hard times. But did you know there are foods that can make you feel good and foods that can make you feel bad…naturally? Foods of the body I am not going to bore you with all of the medical and chemical descriptions of how our bodies work. But think …
