When you take a minute and listen to your favorite song, it can make you feel that they are singing directly to you. Why are the words hitting so close to home? We are all navigating through mountains and hills of our lives trying to get to the other side without losing ourselves along the way. Then the song starts talking about a journey through life, as if they too are on the same journey.
WE ARE NOT ALONE
Musicians are just like us. They too feel and experience their own mountains and hills. No two events in life are ever the same. Nevertheless, musicians are people too. Many songs that are written today took place in someone’s life. It is a heartfelt cry of love and pain.
THE HELP
In prep of my post for tonight, I was hoping to find some accounts of musicians and their lives. What I found touched me even more. In January of 2020, Rolling Stone Magazine printed an article titled “We Can’t Have All Our Artists Die: How the Music Industry is Fighting Mental Health”. As I read through, I found myself in awe. Just because this person is a musician and has a bank account many times larger than mine, does not mean that they are not susceptible to the struggles that we all face. Again, they are people too.
How many times have we been shocked to hear about a beloved artist that was suddenly lost? One’s struggles are no less or more than any others. How we work through them is what is different and unique. Too many unfortunately lose themselves. The music industry is just one case where it can become even harder to navigate as we learn too many of our favorites turn to substances in hopes to ease the burdens.
I can hear the comments of “But what makes them special?” or “The average person struggles too.” You are correct that everyone, rich, poor, little and big, we all have our own struggles.
WITH PEOPLE BUT STILL ALONE
Too many times I find myself thinking of musicians as a higher being that has a talent that I wish I had. How could they have the kind of tension when they have so many people admiring them? Very simple. You can be in a room full of people that know who you are and still feel very much alone. (I know that feeling all too well sometimes.) Standing there lost in your mind, worrying if anyone can see the pain you are facing. Don’t you think that the singer or that band member can have those same thoughts? Who do they turn to? Do they even feel like they can turn to someone?
THERE IS HOPE
Reading about organizations like BackLine, being created to offer anyone that works in the music industry and avenue and path to help. This gives me the hope that has more and more industries and companies see that mental health affects everyone, then just maybe more can be done.
With great warmth,
