Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

Every person wears a mask. Not a literal mask, but a façade they hide behind. They serve different purposes, and most look the same. But we all have one.

How many times have you come across another person talking about someone else only to be sweet as pie when they are near? And how many times have you pretended to be happy when you want to scream inside? Masks. These are all masks that everyone wears at some time in their lives.

I was talking with a friend today when this came up. About how easy it is for some people to act like one way then immediately change to another. Then you have some people that will laugh and dance while they are with their friends, only to go home and scream and cry. Each one a mask hiding the real person from the world.

No one is Spared

I live my life as real as I can be. But I too have a mask. Even though 95% of my day is the real me. No matter whom I am with or where I am. But there is a time everyday that I hide my feelings. I can appear to be strong, even laugh with my friends. But I too, will hide my thoughts and feelings. It is not always because I don’t want someone to see them. It is because I don’t always understand them.

Sometimes people will hide feelings and thoughts from others because they are scared. Scared of being ridiculed or teased. Afraid that they will be treated differently or not allowed to share with others. But there are times that people hide because they just don’t understand what they are feeling. The reasons for the feelings or thoughts are not always clear. And it makes it confusing for us to know why we feel this way. So instead, we pretend and hope it goes away.

Masks come in different shapes and sizes, bright and colorful or dark and dreary. Each person has one. They are used to hide the true person from the world. Maybe because the true person may use words to hurt. Or the true person is just scared.
