Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

I have heard a phrase in the past that didn’t quite make sense until recently. “The person who cares for you the most, understands you the deepest, and stays with you through everything is ultimately you.” We can’t expect everyone to be around every minute. To be available at our beckon call. It doesn’t mean that we don’t have people that do really care about us. But it is true that there is only one person that understands us. The hard part is there are times when I don’t understand myself at all.

Them

My son is a preteen boy. In that transition of child to teenager. That crucial time of his life of trying to figure out who he is. The one thing I always tell him is “if you are happy with you, that is all that matters.” He may not be the skinniest boy. If he wants to try to lose weight, I will stand behind him. But if he doesn’t, I will support that too. It doesn’t mean I won’t teach him about various foods or maybe promote being active. But I will never guilt, shame, or demand him to lose weight.

His favorite colors are orange, pink, and reds. If he wants bright orange shoes or a pink chair, I may warn him of what “may” happen from others, but I will get him those things. I have always told him that my job is to mold him as he becomes an adult. To guide him and provide him with knowledge and choices he can make intelligently. To be able to be happy in the life choices he makes for himself.

Me

I will not always be around to be there for my family and friends. I do not expect them to always be around for me. Every day, each one of us will face some sort of challenge in our life. If we do not believe in ourselves, or love ourselves, those challenges get stronger. I fight my insecurities daily. Whether it is at work, at home, or something very small like playing my game. I struggle to believe that I am anything special in this world. I don’t have many friends. The friends I do have, are very special to me. But they have their own lives.

I hope that one day I do believe in myself. That I would look in the mirror and love what I see. I work on it every day. Holding onto hope that one day I will feel the true happiness I once had in my life. I don’t understand myself many times. Trying to figure out why I feel (or don’t feel) the way I do. But I will not stop trying. And neither should you. Be your own personal superhero. Because you are royalty. And you are loved.
