I must tell you something. I never realized fully how this simple act changed everything for me. Down in the darkness, unable to focus, and feeling all alone. One simple act brought me back. It took someone reaching out and asking, “how are you?” But then it was another person. And then another. They reached out to me and brought me back to the brighter days. That’s it. A simple act of caring about someone enough to ask, “how are you?”

The Dark
It is very easy to get trapped into a pit of despair. Not being able to find your way past the sadness or anger. And it is very easy to feel like you are alone in the world. As if there is no one that really understands what you are going through. They don’t know what you face every day. Or the thoughts and emotions you have. How can they understand it, if you barely understand it?
I have my own insecurities and issues I fight daily. But the one thing I will always do is check on people. I know what it feels like to not have friends or have many people around me. And I understand how it feels being around people but still feeling alone. So, I make sure to check on my friends every now and then. Because by simply asking “how are you doing” can maybe even save a life.

Moving On
Every now and then, I go quiet. With so many thoughts and emotions, it is hard for me to decipher any of them. There are a couple of friends that make sure if I go quiet, they reach out and check on me. I may not be able to talk about what I am going through but just knowing that there is someone out there that cares is enough to get me through the day.
So, when was the last time someone asked you “how are you doing?” And when was the last time you asked someone else? It takes seconds to ask and can save lifetimes. Just a simple 4-word sentence to change a life.
