This morning, I was talking to my son about addictions. He really enjoys having a Dr. Pepper soda once a day. He tried to explain to me that he was not addicted to it, but it was more of a habit. In his mind, addictions were not as bad as habits. So here I am, at 7:00am explaining to my 10 yr old son, the difference between a habit and an addiction.

Habits to Break
Habits are the constant activity that almost becomes second nature. For example, I have a habit of parking in the same parking spot at work. Or, I have a habit of interrupting people if I think I know what they are talking about. Habits are actions. And they have the ability to be broken. Also, there are habits that are good, healthy, and positive. Like the habit of showering and brushing your teeth.

Addictions can destroy
Addictions are far more dangerous. There are too many deaths related to addictions to medications, drugs, and more. But there are other addictions that are not as dangerous, but still only promote negativity and an unhealthy lifestyle. And the worst part about addictions is that they can be a lifelong disorder. For instance, I have a small addiction to chocolate. Not too harmful, other than over a long time my weight and physical health will reflect it.
Addictions can include gambling, sex, and many other nefarious activities. These types not only have the opportunity to damage your health, but also hurt many other people, including loved ones.

Getting Help
The first step to getting help in anything that only offers negativity in your life, is to recognize there is a problem. Addictions can be overcome, but they never go away. To live life to your fullest, you need to accept and manage your addiction. And that is going to be one of the hardest things to do. This doesn’t mean it cannot be done. Only that you will need to dig deep for the strength and support you will need to fight it. And there are many placed you can go to get help, when you are ready to receive it.
