Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

Taking Some Steps to Change my Mind

Every day we do the same routine of waking up and going to school or work. We may be taking care of our family or just taking care of ourselves. But Each day is the same thing. Day in and day out. Our actions are the same. But our mind also can get stuck in this rut. This never-ending cycle of thought leads to no action. I found myself recently in a position that I have been stuck for years. And trying to change is extremely difficult.

The Need for Change

First, I needed to identify that there was a problem and a change was required. My problem was how I was allowing others to dictate my thoughts and actions. Growing up, I had people telling me what to do. Being the youngest of the family and the only girl, I was very protected. They always made sure that I was never in trouble and safe from everything. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to experience the world and make my own mistakes.

All I knew was the fear of making a decision that ended up unfavorable, would stop me from making any decisions. So, I allowed others to make the tough decisions for me. This lead to me losing my voice in the world. And now I know I have a problem and I need to change it. But that leads to the next step, wanting.

Desire for Change

In order for anyone to change, you need to want to change. This can be harder than it seems. The want has to be deep enough to have the drive behind it. Otherwise, it is useless. Just saying you want a new car, does not make a new car appear. You have to have the drive to go after it. And this is where most of us struggle the most. To make a change in your life, you have to put in the work. You want to lost weight, then you need to put the work into changing your diet, your exercise, your habits. Nothing will change if there is no effort.

Action

And finally, to make a change, you have to be willing to accept the outcome. This is the scariest one of all. Because all of this effort may result in new challenges, drama, or pain. But what also is true that the change could bring you peace, happiness, and comfort. There is an unknown to change that opens the door to fear. And that is what can stop so many of us. The unknown outcome.

I have always found it interesting the quotes that are so profound coming from animated movies. And when I think about change, the movie “Finding Nemo” comes to mind. Remember this quote:

Marlin: I promised I’d never let anything happen to him.

Dory: Hmm. That’s a funny thing to promise.

Marlin: What?

Dory: Well, you can’t never let anything happen to him. Then nothing would ever happen to him. Not much fun for little Harpo.

You cannot let nothing happen or nothing will happen. It is scary to be faced with a decision to change or stay the same. Especially when you have no clue what the outcome will be. But the only way to find out is to try. Because if you do not try to make the change, then your world will never change. And if you are faced with a situation that causes you emotional and physical pain, not changing can result in life or death. Change can be scary, but so is staying in a place that is not good for you. And with the right support, making that change can be a little easier.
