Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

If you are like me, reaching out to anyone for help feels impossible. The feeling of being a burden to them. Or not wanting to bring down the mood, these are things that stop me from wanting to talk about everything. Now reverse this and think about what other people maybe feeling and not reaching out to you. Then when they do, how do you handle being someone’s support? Because that is not easy either.

I am one that reaches out to all my friends at some point to check in. I want them to know I am here and thinking about them. They have someone who cares and is willing to take some time and listen to whatever they are going through. Each one knows that I will listen with no judgment and allow them to get all of their thoughts and feelings out.

One Side

When I tell someone I care about them, it is not just words. When they tell me they are going through something, I listen to every words and emotion shared. And when they are done talking, I offer love and understanding. Then the next day, I check back to see how they are feeling. I don’t stop thinking about them. Never stop caring about them. Well…not fully true. There are exceptions for when I find their struggles affecting me.

Being supportive to another is not easy for anyone to do. For some people, it can add to their own struggles and worries. Then suddenly they don’t have much left to be able to take care of themselves. There is a balance of knowing how to be there for your friend and love one and when more help than you can provide is necessary. That should never deter anyone from being supportive. Only to know you have your own limits too.

Together

Life hits everyone. From simple jabs of emotional hits to life changing dramatic torment. We all feel it, live it, and survive it. Having support by your side through it all is vital. Being able to ask for help is strength. Knowing how to pour from your cup without making it empty is the challenge of it all. The best thing to do through all of this, is take one step at a time with a friend by your side.
