Could you accurately describe what someone with depression looks like? Can you tell me how they would act? What many people don’t understand is that depression is not always noticeable. Sure, if you see someone sad or quiet, they could be dealing with depression. But there are many of us that go through life with a filter. A sort of mask to hide away our true feelings. Hiding behind smiles and laughter. Only to drown in sorrow when we are alone. So, I ask again. Can you accurately describe what someone with depression looks like?

Every day I have moments of solidarity and quiet, but that is not always a good thing for me. When I am not quiet, I can be seen laughing with my friends, chatting with my family, and singing to my music in the car. All of that and I am still dealing with depression. Because every day I battle with negative thoughts about myself. My week consists of working all week, taking care of the family in the evenings and by the time the weekends come around, I have no motivation to do anything. So many weekends lost just staying in bed all day long.

Depression is not something that people wear like a badge. It is something we try to hide away. Because most of the time, we don’t want others to know we are sad. We don’t want to announce it, especially since we don’t always understand it. For me, I know what I get depressed about, but I don’t understand why I still have these thoughts. Or even how to explain what I am feeling.

So, as you go about your day, think about your family and friends. That one friend that seems to be laughing all of the time, watch them. See how they are when they think no one is watching. That is when you see the true feelings. And also, check in with your family and friends regularly. I have some very special friends in my life that check in with me once in a while, when they have not heard from me for a day or two.

Depressed can become live threatening if not treated. Some depressions are mild and temper around seasons and the environment. Those are easier to control by altering the person’s location. But other depressions can bring thoughts of suicide. Suicide is never to be joked about. If you or a loved one ever brings up the topic of suicide, please take this seriously. Too many people in the world are lost each day. (Suicide Helpline) Please consider getting help from a professional if you find yourself dealing with depression. I believe in all of you.
