Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

Here in the United States, the Christmas season is upon us. The stores are open until late at night. Music is played wherever you go. And lights are decorating the houses along the street. But this year I have been struggling, like some of you, to really be in the Christmas spirit. How easily does a holiday, the weather, and our environment affect our mental health?

Twas the night before

Your environment is a big player for your mental health. If you find yourself in a place that is noisy, chaotic, and stressful, your mind does not have a safe place to relax. Also is true if the environment is too quiet, sad or fearful. There is too much emptiness that your mind looks for things to focus on. For the environment to work for you, the space needs to be set for you and only you.

Silent Night

I discovered recently that I lost my perfect space. Through the stress of my job and my personal life, I lost the time I used to shut down my thoughts and emotions. You see, I had made a space in my home that was for me. A small little patio that I could relax in. I also focused on making sure I had a small amount of time carved out each day to break away from everything. But, at some point, that time was lost.

Jingle Bells

I discovered that I had a problem when small events were triggering me. Simple requests were causing me to be negative. But ultimately, it was when my son got sick that I knew it was time to seek professional help. And I am so glad I did. Because it was then that I realized that I had lost my momentum. My push to be happy was stalled and it was time to start it up again.

Deck the Halls

So, my Christmas wish for all you, find a space, a hobby, anything that brings you an element of peace and happiness. Something that you can enjoy, and it gives you that element of yourself you may have been missing. We all love our families and friends. But don’t forget that you need to love yourself even more. You cannot pour from an empty cup. I wish you all a beautiful holiday season. May the time you spend with loved ones bring you peace. For we all can use some happiness in our lives.
