Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

Stress, it is a silent killer. How the world is right now, it is hard pressed to find anyone that doesn’t have some kind of stress. No matter what stress you have going on in your life, without management, it can kill. It will take strength and determination, but accomplishable. How do you allow stress to affect you?

Mentally

Stress can impact your mental state very easily. Being faced with negative changes, will make a person start down a depression path. When I was faced with changes at work that reduced my work significantly, it was easy for me to start thinking that I messed up. That it was my fault and I was no good, worthless. Instead of taking the time to process the situation, I was ready to place blame on myself.

Physically

What many people forget is that stress also can damage physical health. I am sure you have heard or seen people “stress eating” or they stop eating because of stress. Both are dangerous to the body. Additionally, how many times have you developed a migraine due to the stress you are carrying? Constant headaches can cause internal damage to the brain over time. And don’t even get me started on how stress can affect your heart.

Manage

Managing stress is not easy. The best option is having an outlet. Exercising, yoga, walking, hobbies, or even just being with your friends. The second-best option is talking. Finding friends, family, therapists, counselors, or mentors, that can offer you a chance to discuss your thoughts and feelings out loud. Receiving an outsider perspective and allowing you to process the situation.

Although what gives you stress cannot be controlled, the way you handle it can be. You have the strength and ability to decide what to worry about and what not too. Take the phrase “Don’t Stress the Small Stuff” to heart. Because in the grand scheme of life, it is all small stuff. Work changing, school difficulties, family drama, friendship strain, relationships testing, are all things that can be managed. Sure, there are events that are not as simple. In the meantime, keep breathing and talking it out. You are strong and will make it to the light at the end of the tunnel.
