Exploring the fabric of our stories one character at a time.

Are you mending your mind over the edge?

It is an overwhelming need. A desire to have it all the time. The feeling, the experience, what makes everything fade away. Addiction controls and damages everything in its path. And I don’t know if there such a thing called a healthy addiction. Can addictions mend a mind already over the edge?

Identification

Addiction is very difficult to overcome. “Once an addict, always an addict.” But…there are ways to push past and find yourself on the healthier side. That first step, accepting you have a problem. Nothing can happen unless you want it to. You want help, to feel better, or just get away from the addiction? Only you can recognize and accept that there is a problem. It starts with you.

I have a family on my street that recently was faced with the consequences of an addiction. One of the parents stepped out and seemed to try to argue they didn’t have a problem. But when faced with the facts, of bringing the addiction home, exposing children to it, and not caring who in the neighborhood saw, suddenly their fight left.

Addiction is not just drugs and alcohol. Gambling, sex, caffeine, prescription medication, shopping, food, and even exercise addictions can be very dangerous. It is not only your physical health, but relationships, reputation, mental health, and more are impacted. Using all your money on gambling and shopping, leaving nothing left for the house or food. Sure, you have nice clothes, but no food on the table. And before you ask, exercise can be an addiction. Exercising is effective ONLY when performed properly. Without guidance, you can damage your body, lose too much weight, and faint.

Want

Your life will never change, unless you want it to. Sure, life may make alterations, but you will continue to face addictions unless you decide to do something. Everything starts with you. Remember, how do you move mountains? One rock at a time. You will be faced with hurdles and heartbreak. But, deep down you are strong to stand back up. Plus, having a strong support system will keeping you standing straight.

Addictions can be managed. You may never be free from them, but through time, you can avoid them. It takes the courage to recognize the problem and the willingness to accept the problem. Being able to have a healthier life by overcoming the addiction and living each day knowing how strong you are. Just remember one thing though. You are human. Give yourself credit for getting through each day. Be proud of the times you controlled the situation when faced with peer pressure. Take pride in saying no. A healthier you is on its way!
